Landlady b/w Optometrist is the newest release and next step in Young Mammals’ catalog. Due March 10th, 2012 on the Bombs By Mail label, each side of the record boasts refined versions of a few of the band’s musical personalities, working as a crash-course for the uninitiated.
The two songs are placed on opposite sides of the band’s sonic spectrum, displaying just how big the quartet’s playground is. “Landlady”, the a-side, is a raucous flash of loud, anxious, air-tight pop. With some clear ideas on capturing a mood for the release, the band self-tracked the song to tape and mixed with co-conspirator Steve Christensen. “Optometrist”, the b-side, was recorded in Brooklyn with Nick Stumpf at the helm and displays Young Mammals’ knack for presenting delicate lullabies through a filter of noise and dissonance.
Following the release of 2010’s Carrots, Young Mammals enjoyed a wave of successful touring and flattering praise from national publications and internet taste-makers (Philadelphia Weekly, FILTER Magazine, BrooklynVegan). A respectful showing for the group of West Houstonians who, at this point, have created everything without help from a record label. A testament to the far reaches of the internet, the band played to capacity crowds at that year’s CMJ Music Festival, SXSW, and to contingents of fans hip to Young Mammals in smaller nooks of America.
Catch the band at the 20th Annual Noise Pop Festival, playing Cafe du Nord on February 25th.
