Long Long Long was a Halifax quartet that disbanded in 2011. Guitarists/vocalists Brad Loughead and Mike Wright moved to Montreal and immediately started Each Other, who I am rather enjoying.

The band’s discography is available for a name-your-price option on bandcamp, and it’s the perfect thing to hold me over until Each Other release their next. There are 25 other songs just as airtight as the Top Gun-referencing “Goose is Dead, Maverick. Goose is Dead”. If the vocal breakdown just before the end doesn’t leave you smiling, I don’t know what will.

Each Other’s currently on tour… you should keep tabs with their facebook/tumblr/bandcamp.

I love how far this song has come since Hallelujah The Hills frontman Ryan Walsh first shared it in 2010. A personal highlight from their newest album No One Knows What Will Happen Next, which was fan-backed by the way. They celebrate its release tonight at Middle East Downstairs with Viva Viva, ex-Bostonians Frank Smith, and The New Highway Hymnal.

Pretty & Nice “Yonkers”

Pretty & Nice asked me to write some words about their so-worth-the-wait LP3, and whether said words are used by the band or not, articulating why I liked the thing was especially challenging and fun.

This is a song that may or may not be upon it, performed during Hear Nebraska’s Love Drunk tour of the USA. It’s a cool series that you should keep tabs on… a live video of a great band for each state.

Debo Band “Asha Gedawo”

This is the show to be at tonight. Awesome Tapes From Africa is a blog that is just that, and founder Brian Shimkovitz is currently DJing his musical discoveries on a little tour outside of NYC. He’ll be spinning (reels! yukyukyuk) at Spectacle in Jamaica Plain, and what better local to join the musical festivities than Debo Band.

The raddest things have happened to the Ethiopazznjop ensemble since I wrote about them in late 2010: nice words by Jon Pareles of the NY Times, NPR filming the band during SXSW, a performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Most importantly, they’ve signed to Sub Pop, and their self-titled full-length comes out in July. I recall hearing this news and being very pessimistic about it, expecting the label to quietly and safely push Debo from their imprint Next Ambience. I was very wrong. Their amazingly written bio is displayed right on subpop.com (seriously read it, you’ll get psyched), and single “Asha Gedawo” is on Sub Pop’s Mixed Nuts compilation alongside Beach House and Shabazz Palaces. Such a great introduction to Debo’s signature shuffle… I could blab about the Ethiopian music I’ve heard vs the afrobeat and highlife I’ve heard, but that’s stupid. Come dance to it.

Burton Crane “Whatcha Gonna Do?”

I was introduced to this fella’s EPK on Sonicbids in 2007, found the song to be bizarrely awesome, added it to my iPod. So please excuse my blown mind upon hearing that Burton Crane performed “Whatcha Gonna Do?” on America’s Got Talent last night… and everyone loved it. I do not believe he has another in song his repertoire.

On Friday, Earthquake Party! went over to Loroto HQ with all of their gear, drank some beers and shot their first music video. By Monday it was edited and yesterday Liz Pelly premiered the thing on Boston Phoenix’s blog On The Download. Good week. Director Addison Post on the video:

A deliberate portrayal of how Justin, Mallory, and J-Raff interact with their instruments, and an unrelenting loud image reacting to the vibrations. We shot 24 takes, I’m still in complete awe that anyone can last that long with consistent energy. They are amazing artists—loud, vital, hypnotized by their own music.

Monday morning music. This is such a great songwriter’s set from The Shins’ frontman, an indication that the band was and always will be James Mercer. Most of his best songs, three choice covers, acoustic guitar, occasional harmonica, a perfect delivery of so many great lyrics.

“95bFM have been playing Boston’s Earthquake Party’s ‘Pretty Little Hand’ quite a bit lately – it’s a thrashy, skuzzy little brat of a song – Cheese on Toast freaking loves the shit out of it, too. The other tracks are both equally great – ‘Nails&Hammers’ is an epic 49 seconds long; with a crazy ‘I’ve turned the direct-drive turntable off’ stop – I love how it thrashes its boy/girl vox like an over-eager puppy with a teddy bear. While other b-side ‘Brains’ just thuds like a really good hangover. In a good way. Anyway – don’t just take our words for it – listen / download for yourself.”

Squirrel Nut Zippers “Twilight”

It’s great to not read Squirrel Nut Zippers’ name on the Swing Revival Wikipedia page. That’s because they didn’t revive much swing in their music. There was much more of a focus on instrumentation and improvisation… likely a reason to name their album Hot. Try this one out in the wee ours of your weekend.
