Quasi “I Never Want To See You Again”
Sometimes I forget how great this song is. Quasi knew (knew? knows!) how to counter typically brutal lyrics with playful music… “Please Do”, another song from their 1998 album Featuring “Birds”, serves as a great Exhibit B. What sets “I Never Want To See You Again” apart from other pop songs is its patience; the way the fun opening progression quickly falls apart, then takes a minute or two to gather itself. When Sam and Janet’s voices finally enter, they blend perfectly, and momentum builds: “We purchase pleasure, and pay for it with hurt / but we rarely get our money’s worth”. Then the song pivots again, getting brighter musically and darker lyrically. The coda is arguably the punchline, with the song’s title being sung a few times and the last syllable extended over drawn out chords and slowed down drums. Definitely polarizing.
