Sippy Cup Everything’s CMJ 2011 Showcase
Saturday, October 22nd at Pianos, 158 Ludlow Street, NYC.
(9:45pm) Ava Luna are a Brooklyn seven-piece that tip their hat to soul and R&B classics while also trekking into unknown territory. Vocals are the focus: the three female singers in the band are not “backup” by any definition, up front and sometimes providing a critical layer to the synth/bass/drum rhythm section. They also bolster frontman Carlos Hernandez’s ernest delivery, as heard on their recent Services EP. No wonder Toro Y Moi requested they hit the road with his band in September.

(9:00pm) MiniBoone releases On MiniBoone Mountain later this fall on Drug Front Records, another batch of ingredients in their witches’ brew of caffeinated, unabashedly-delivered power pop. “Brand New Thing” is a prime demonstration of the band’s frantic energy, replete with galloping layers of drums and bass, explosions of guitar noise, and tripled-teamed vocals. The quintet is currently prepping their debut LP.

(8:15pm) Celestial Shore are a quintet showing off their self-described “space rock”. 365 Albums a Year describes their California Eden EP quite well, saying “Celestial Shore sounds like what went on Brian Wilson’s mind during the height of his struggles with metal illness. The songs are dreamy, yet decidedly un-chill one-to-two minute nuggets of sun-splashed intelligence, with the dexterity of Tortoise and the extremely short attention span of Guided by Voices.”

(7:30pm) Jape are an Irish ensemble, on our side of the pond in support of their recently released LP, Ocean of Frequency. On the topic of standout “The Oldest Mind”,20 Jazz Funk Greats said, “Crystal clear synths and half-dreamt acoustic guitars locate us somewhere at the edge of the forest of Paw Tracks and the beach of Wierd Records.”

(7:00pm) Little Racer has had a productive year since opening 2010’s Sippy Cup CMJ Showcase. The Brooklyn trio has introduced their dreamy-but-rhythmic pop to local spots like Brooklyn Bowl, Shea Stadium, and Mercury Lounge. They now look ahead to their first physical release: The Town / Split For The Coast 7” is out on UK-based Young and Lost Club in November.
