Fat History Month are back from their 2nd national tour, this time supporting and not previewing songs from their Fucking Dispair LP. The album is a true gem, documenting the duo’s ability to ebb-and-flow between post-rock and post-punk with natural, charming minimalism. Today will mark the release of their Gorilla 7”, a collection of songs recorded way back in March 2009. It’s being put out on lovely yellow vinyl by the fine folks at Sweaters and Pearls, pick up a copy this evening.
“Heart Takes a Beating” MP3
Celestial Shore are an NYC-via-LA quintet coming north to get some fresh(er) air after CMJ. The Place Aux Dames 7” and California Eden cuts on their bandcamp take leaps and bounds between each influence. The best I can do: church choir harmonies coo over (against?) rhythms reminiscent of Faraquet and Battles. It’s an amazing well-choreographed bit of fun for your ears.
“Pals” MP3
Thief Thief have been quietly ruling 2011, joining stages with Joan of Arc, The Vandelles, Ringo Deathstarr, and other varying locals in Boston. Their approach to the guitar-drums instrumental duo has been described by the Boston Phoenix as, “a slightly more even-keeled Marnie Stern or Hella” and that’s pretty spot on. Expect some odd-meter fun and mechanical gymnastics, all done in a highly melodic manner.
